The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has stated that for over a year the Agency has been unable to verify on an ongoing basis the status of Iran’s declared uranium stocks – including uranium enriched to 60 per cent – at Iranian nuclear facilities damaged by attacks. In his address to the 70th IAEA General Conference, he added that the lack of information on this nuclear material and the inability to access the facilities to carry out verification raise “serious concerns regarding nuclear proliferation” and require action “with the utmost urgency”.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) met with the head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), Admiral Brad Cooper. The Saudi state broadcaster reported this, explaining that the two discussed the latest developments in the region and the growing threat posed by the Yemeni Houthi militants. No details were given regarding the location of the meeting.

A senior Iranian nuclear official has accused the United States of “malicious” behaviour and “abuse of power”, after Tehran complained that US officials had prevented it from attending a conference organised by the UN nuclear agency. “Denying access to the General Conference sets a precedent that will affect everyone. And that is why we must oppose such oppressive political pressure,” Behrouz Kamalvandi, a senior official at the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, told AFP. “This latest malicious act by the US administration can only be interpreted as childish behaviour.”

On Tuesday 22 September, around a hundred priests — from eight countries and various regions of Italia — belonging to the ‘Priests Against Genocide’ network will gather in Rome. The public part of the day will begin at 3 pm with a moment of prayer at the Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia. Beijing has rejected “baseless allegations” that Chinese entities provided Tehran with satellite images of a military base housing US troops in Jordan, both before and after an Iranian attack that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers. The allegations reported at the weekend by the Wall Street Journal concerned the missile strikes launched by Iran on 17 July against the Muwaffaq Salti airbase in Jordan. The anonymous US officials quoted by the Wall Street Journal did not identify the Chinese entities involved nor did they suggest that Beijing was directly responsible. “We firmly oppose unfounded and unsubstantiated suspicions and accusations,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press conference.

The Houthis, an Iranian-backed rebel group in Yemen, have expanded their area of control in the Red Sea by seizing two islands, Greater Hanish and Lesser Hanish, situated to the north of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait: the Associated Press reports on its website, citing sources from both the Houthis themselves and the opposing government forces, which are backed by Riyadh. The AP adds that the capture of the two islands took place whilst, over the past weekend, pro-government forces were attempting to reorganise themselves to counter the offensive launched in recent days by the Houthis, which has enabled them to gain ground in south-western Yemen. A government military officer quoted by the AFP news agency had stated that Greater Hanish and Lesser Hanish had fallen under Houthi control as early as last Friday, when the rebel group had also seized the strategic island of Mayyun, further south.

On Sunday, the Yemeni Armed Forces released a video showing what they described as members of their air force targeting Houthi positions and vehicles. The army subsequently released a video purportedly showing Othman Mujali, a member of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, inspecting troops from the Second Emergency Brigade and inaugurating a command and control headquarters. The conflict in Yemen intensified on Sunday, when government forces launched attacks against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels along the Red Sea, and the Houthis opened fire towards neighbouring Saudi Arabia, which supports the Yemeni government.

An Israeli NGO has accused the Israeli authorities of implementing a policy aimed at “eliminating” any possibility of a Palestinian state, in particular by intensifying violence and restrictions against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. In a 249-page report entitled “Project Elimination”, the human rights organisation B’Tselem states that this objective is based on “violence and intimidation, restrictions on freedom of movement, economic suffocation, social and political destruction, ethnic cleansing and territorial conquest”. AFP has sought comment from the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich – the architect of the accelerated settlement policy – and the army. The Israeli authorities routinely reject allegations of abuses in the West Bank, a territory occupied since 1967.

The US claims regarding nuclear activities at the Iranian site of Pickaxe Mountain are baseless. This was stated by the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, as reported by Al Jazeera. “It cannot be claimed that there are nuclear facilities inside Pickaxe Mountain,” said Baghaei, adding that such reports are “an integral part of the media and psychological war” waged by Washington.

Iran announced today that it had summoned the Austrian chargé d’affaires after Vienna refused to allow the head of Iran’s nuclear agency to attend a meeting of the UN nuclear agency in Vienna. “The Austrian government’s refusal to issue visas to the delegation from the Islamic Republic of Iran is a completely unjustified decision,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei during a press conference. “It is clear to us that this incident occurred under pressure from the United States, but that does not absolve the Austrian government of its responsibilities.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry today denied any involvement by the country in the war in Yemen. “Iran does not interfere in Yemeni affairs,” ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told reporters, adding that the Houthis are “entirely independent actors who make their own decisions based on their own interests”.

Israeli Culture Minister Miki Zohar has stated that he will initiate proceedings to revoke the citizenship of film-makers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, after their documentary on the genocide perpetrated by Israel in Gaza, ‘Naza’, won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. In a post on X, Zohar described the documentary as “vile” and its victory at the film festival as “shocking”. He accused the filmmakers of harming the country “solely to win the applause of anti-Semites around the world” and claimed that their actions “constitute treason against the state”. “As Minister of Culture, I will take immediate action to revoke the Israeli citizenship of these despicable filmmakers for treason against the state,” he wrote. According to the official synopsis from the Venice Film Festival, the 80-minute film documents Israel’s use of artificial intelligence-based systems to carry out “premeditated mass killings” against Palestinians in Gaza. The documentary received a 25-minute standing ovation at its premiere screening at the Festival.

The Israeli army has arrested four Palestinians in the Bethlehem Governorate, in the West Bank, including a father and his son. This was reported by the Palestinian news agency Wafa, which added that soldiers stormed the city of Bethlehem, the Dheisheh refugee camp and the Aida camp. Israeli forces also raided the town of Tubas and searched several homes.

US President Donald Trump has praised the work of his special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, whilst rumours are circulating that he is considering promoting CIA Director John Ratcliffe to take their place. When questioned by journalists on board Air Force One, Trump highlighted the work carried out by Witkoff and Kushner to secure the ceasefire in Gaza last year. “Take Gaza, for example. Look at the fact that we managed to bring all the hostages home,” Trump said, as quoted by the Times of Israel. “There isn’t much fighting in Gaza. Hamas is now willing to hand over its weapons,” he added.

Iran has made it clear to regional players that it is willing to discuss its nuclear programme only once the issue of the Strait of Hormuz has been resolved, including the lifting of the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. This is reported by CNN, which states that, by contrast, the US intends to resume talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme. Officials from the Trump administration have indicated, in private conversations with their counterparts from the Gulf states, that Washington would like to “refocus any future US-Iran negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear programme, rather than on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz”.

Iranian state media have reported that several explosions of unknown origin were heard in the Sirik area, in the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan. The area is very close to the Strait of Hormuz, in the Persian Gulf.
